It seems like forever since my last visit to Zeta Tucanae, though it has been less than two standard months. It was great to see you again and most fortunate that the old man was away on business. I don’t think I could have faced him again. On the flight back to Gliese 900.1, I chuckled at the thought of his reaction when he heard the news of my return, especially in light of the conflict in the air. It may be worth suggesting that he heighten security around the holdings as it certainly appeared to be lacking on my arrival. My current connection with the 8th Dragon Squadron could make things a little difficult for Furieux House if certain people get a handle on who I am and where I came from. I don’t mean to worry you unnecessarily, but precautions may be wise.
The 8th and I are now currently based in the Caerus System, where we are working for an independent group. I cannot relay the entire details as they are of a sensitive nature, and probably against everything our father believes in, but we were approached by a particularly attractive representative during a contract in Lushertha and were offered a substantial amount to accept their proposal. A few of the crew were dubious given the lack of concrete details, but I was curious as to what she wanted from us. As it happens, I was eventually ‘tricked’ into accepting the contract at a table in the Star & Garter. Bast Snake Gin is an extremely potent drink that contains the preserved dead body of a serpent of the same name inside the bottle. Now I am a pretty hardened drinker but this stuff nearly killed me. Our pretty prospective client decided to pose a wager. Clearly aware of my fascination with her, she suggested that we engage in a drinking contest. To win I had to drink her under the table. If I lost, I would sign the contract. If I won, well, you can guess the rest.
What I didn’t know, was that after bribing the bar staff, she ensured that I was drinking one of the galaxy’s strongest beverages while she was downing shots of standard vodka. Needless to say, she won. I barely managed to breathlessly crawl to DRY411’s cabin to inform him of our new contract, before passing out, sweat dripping from every pore. Well, you win some, you lose some, and this woman was more than a match for me. Of course, my Dragon brothers don’t know this, I’d be ridiculed! In hindsight, I guess I should have taken her dishonesty more seriously as it has now come to light that she isn’t quite who she claims to be. However, a contract is a contract our job continues. We will, however, be keeping tabs on our mysterious employers. We are sure that there is more here than meets the eye.
Ana, regarding our discussion after Mohizz left with the boy, Jaysan, I still conclude that you were utterly wrong during your little ‘counselling’ session. I really wish you wouldn’t act like some kind of therapist around me. I know you mean well, but I know who I am. I don’t have any fear of commitment, as my Dragon brothers will testify, nor are my drinking habits any indication of a need to forget the past. My life changed dramatically on leaving Zeta Tucanae and the galaxy holds a far brighter future than sitting behind a desk in an office on Velidhu Dream or Elswick. I was also more than a little annoyed at your suggestion that I repeatedly seek short term liaisons with women in an effort to cover my real feelings. I choose this life because it suits me. To have no ties or bonds is liberating in a way that I never believed possible, and to suggest that it stems from the brief relationship I had with Katerina is ridiculous and laughable. I chose to leave, because it was in her best interests and though hearing of her recent marriage was surprising, I am more than happy for her. She made the right decision. I am too much the lone wolf, too selfish. I know she is your friend, Red, but I would prefer that you didn’t broach this subject again. I made my choice and that part of my life is over.
After the Caerus contract is complete, I think I will take a trip back to Darwyn again. Perhaps spend a little more time with you than I did in my last fleeting visit. Maybe I’ll even say hello to the old man.
I miss you, Ana, see you soon.
